The bank holds a diverse collection of South African art, much of which has been collected over a period of time. CityStudio was called in during the bank's refurbishment programme of its executive floor, to assist with the various disciplines associated with art.

The existing paintings were reframed in hand gilded moulding, each frame chosen to best suit the style, subject and period of each work. African embroidered cloths and original prints were also framed, placed and hung. Various African objet d'art were sourced and supplied by CityStudio. These range from bronzes, masks, beadwork, figures etc. The objet d'art originate from many regions in Africa and reflects the rich cultural diversity of the continent.

The final result is an exciting and eclectic mix of artwork which has received many a compliment from both staff and guests.

Hilton Hotel, Johannesburg

An article in the Star Business Report sums it up.

"South African artists get pride of place inside hotel

A strong feature of the Sandton Hilton is the artwork by a number of South Africa's best known artists. Virtually all the works accentuate the African theme of the interior decor... The artwork of the bedrooms was the responsibility of consulting art dealer and framing supplier, CityStudio, which specialises in developing themes put forward by corporate clients and then acquiring the artwork accordingly. The bulk of the artwork for the bedrooms and the bathrooms was created by Noel Bissaker who worked from the interior designer's original colour boards. The pieces are signed, limited edition prints framed by CityStudio. CityStudio also coordinated the commissioning of a stone sculpture in the foyer by Lawrence Chait, and the Japanese heads conceptualised and executed by Bernie Stanko for the Japanese section of the restaurant."

CityStudio commenced by identifying the key focal points within the various occupied spaces. The intention was to maximize the visual effect through efficient usage of minimum quantities, thus controlling costs and ensuring that the artwork did not appear assembled in a haphazard manner. CityStudio purposefully selected pictorial images that would appear synergistic in any one given area, but at the same time subtly differ from one area to the next. This helped to establish a cohesive visual theme for the overall project.

Although the art prints were of a universal subject, they were intended to have some relevance to the geographical area. Banking and gold share certificates of South Africa were supplied and framed to provide a pictorial association with the business of finance. All the share certificates were old, some over one hundred years.

The African objet d'art consisted of carved timber figures suitable for floor standing; plus mask-like faces symbolizing people and forged iron shapes symbolising old currency.
